Volunteering as an AVMA Officer

The officers of the Association include the president, president-elect, vice president, treasurer, immediate past president, board of directors chair, board of directors vice chair, the executive vice president, and the assistant executive vice president. Specific duties and responsibilities of the officers are detailed in the AVMA Bylaws (PDF).

The president, president-elect, and vice president must be voting members of the Association for at least ten years immediately prior to their election. All other officers must be voting members of the Association immediately prior to their election.

The president-elect, and when necessary, the president are elected at each annual session of the House of Delegates. The terms of the president and president-elect commence at the first regular meeting of the Board of Directors following the close of the annual session of the House of Delegates at which they were elected. The president-elect immediately and automatically succeeds to the office of president at the end of the term as president-elect. The president automatically succeeds to the office of immediate past president at the end of the term as President. The vice-president serves a two-year term, which commences at the first regular meeting of the Board of Directors following the close of the annual session of the House of Delegates at which they were elected.

Candidates must submit an Officer Position Application form and a resume to the Office of the Executive Vice President prior to the last scheduled meeting of the House Advisory Committee (HAC) before the HOD session during which the election will be held to allow time for the HAC to examine and verify the candidate’s credentials. Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications by April 1 and must do so to participate in the Candidate’s Introductory Breakfast later that summer. Candidates may be nominated from the floor of the HOD session during which the election is held so long as the HAC is first given the opportunity to examine and verify the candidate’s credentials.

The executive vice president, assistant executive vice president, and treasurer are elected annually by the Board of Directors. The treasurer can serve a maximum of six consecutive, one-year terms.
