Membership and Dues Payment FAQ

Q: I want to join the AVMA. How long is the approval process for new membership applications?
A: If you apply online, the application process is expedited and processed the same business day, unless adjustments/corrections need to be made based on the information submitted. Applications that are submitted by mail will take at least one business day to process once received.

Q: Is payment of member dues required at the time the application is submitted?
A: Yes. Applications can not be processed without payment.

Q: Do I have to be a U.S. resident to be eligible for AVMA membership and member benefits?
A: No. U.S. residency is not required. Any individual who has earned a professional degree in veterinary medicine from a school or college of veterinary medicine is eligible for membership.

Q: I just graduated from vet school this year; do I need to complete an application for membership?
A: Congratulations on graduating from veterinary school and fulfilling your dream of becoming a veterinarian! If you graduated in good standing with your AVMA student organization, you receive complimentary membership for the remainder of the year you graduated; therefore you do not need to complete a membership application. Q: I am a graduate from a foreign veterinary graduate school; do I need to be an AVMA member to practice in the United States?
A: As a veterinary graduate, you are eligible for membership in the AVMA. However, membership does not provide you a license or give you the ability to work as a veterinarian in the United States. Veterinary clinical practitioners are required to be licensed to practice. As a graduate of a non-AVMA-accredited school, you have to complete a certification program such as the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) or the Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Equivalence (PAVE) before taking the NAVLE as well as possibly a state licensing exam. Q: My membership has lapsed and is not currently active; how do I reinstate my expired membership?
A: If your membership became inactive this year, you may still be able to renew your membership at, or you can contact the Member Services & Recruitment Center at 1-800-248-2862, ext. 6631, or at If your membership has lapsed for more than a year, you will need to complete a new online application. Don’t remember your sign-in information? Click on the "Forgot your ID/Password" link in the Sign In box and enter your email address.

Q: What does it cost to become an AVMA member?
A: Membership costs are detailed in the Membership section of the website.

Q: Is there a lifetime membership in the AVMA?
A: No, there is no life membership. However, members who maintain continuous AVMA membership throughout their career can gain the benefit of reduced dues once they retire or dues exemption once they reach honor-roll status.

Q: How do I know if I qualify for reduced dues?
A: Recent graduates and those currently pursuing a full-time residency, internship, graduate or post-graduate study may be eligible for reduced dues. Qualified applicants will automatically receive this discount, based on the information provided on the application. Other reduced dues options are available to active members.

Q: How can I request a dues exemption?
A: AVMA members in good standing may qualify for a dues exemption under certain circumstances.

Q: Do I need AVMA membership to be eligible for AVMA PLIT professional liability insurance or PLIT renewal?
A: Veterinary insurance coverage through the AVMA's professional liability insurance trust in an AVMA member benefit; therefore, you must be an active AVMA member to be eligible to purchase this insurance coverage or qualify for PLIT renewal. Completing a membership application online will expedite your application process.

Q: How do I sign up for or renew my AVMA PLIT or AVMA LIFE insurance coverage?
A: Although AVMA membership is required to be eligible for AVMA PLIT and AVMA LIFE insurance, coverage is not automatic. You will need to sign up for and renew coverage separately with AVMA PLIT and AVMA LIFE. You can do that on the insurance trusts’ websites; find AVMA PLIT at, and AVMA LIFE at

Q: I’ve just started retirement. How do I change my member status to retired?
A: Active AVMA members in good standing who have retired can submit a request for retired status using the Application for Reduced Dues. To learn more about the requirements for retired status, visit the Reduced Dues page.

Q: I am a veterinary technician; am I eligible for membership?
A: Veterinary technicians are not eligible for AVMA membership; however, you may be eligible for membership with the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA).

Q: Can I pay by check online?
A: Not at this time. All major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Discover) are acceptable methods of payment online.

Q: Will I get a receipt so my employer can reimburse me?
A: Once you submit your online application, you will receive an email confirming your application submission and your dues payment. You can use the email confirmation as a receipt; otherwise, you will have access to a formal receipt once you are approved for membership.

Q: Are dues tax deductible?
A: AVMA dues are not tax deductible as charitable contributions. They may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses. However, the estimated 4% that is attributable to AVMA lobbying expenses is not deductible.

Q: Are membership dues refundable?
A: Membership dues are nonrefundable, and membership is nontransferable.

Q: Is group payment an option? Can I pay for more than one member?
A: Yes, you can pay for up to 25 AVMA members at one time. Go to the AVMA online membership dues payment page and sign in by entering the first member's AVMA Member ID number and Password. Once you are signed in, you will have the opportunity to enter the ID number of each additional member. Only one form of payment will be accepted for group renewals.

Q: Do I have to renew my membership online, or are there other methods?
A: You can renew your membership online, by mail, by fax, or over the phone.

Q: I have an existing account, but I don’t remember my AVMA ID# or my password.
A: Click on the Forgot your ID/Password link within the Sign In box to enter your email address. An email with your AVMA ID and a link to reset your password will be emailed to you immediately.

Q: Is there a printable membership application available?
A: Yes. The application (pdf) is available for download to print. Completed applications can be mailed to:
