AVMA Membership

SAVMA members that graduate in good standing with their chapter automatically qualify and convert to free membership for the remainder of the year, providing full access to AVMA member benefits. Beyond that, recent graduates receive a 50% membership discount for the following two years after graduation, a savings of $330.

The AVMA protects and elevates the quality of veterinary care by providing educational accreditation and certification programs. The AVMA applies rigorous standards for accreditation and certification of veterinary programs and institutions, and those related to foreign veterinary graduates, veterinary technicians and veterinary specialties.


Promoting the Importance of Veterinarians

Through social media, public resources, campaigns, and media relations efforts, the AVMA promotes veterinarians by increasing public and media awareness of the important work veterinarians do for society – from keeping pets healthy to ensuring food safety.

Partners For Healthy Pets Supported by AVMA, the American Animal Hospital Association and other industry partners, this program provides resources to increase awareness of and demand for preventive care.

What You Need to Know About Paying for Veterinary School

Affiliate Members

Affiliate membership in the AVMA is available for non-veterinarians who teach veterinary medicine or the sciences allied to veterinary medicine, and those engaged in veterinary research. The cost of affiliate membership is the same as that for AVMA voting members. To apply for affiliate membership, complete sections 1,3, and 5 of the membership application and submit it with the additional required documentation:

  • Cover letter indicating the reason for interest in AVMA affiliate membership
  • Complete curriculum vitae
  • Letters of recommendation from two active AVMA members or members of an organization represented in the AVMA House of Delegates.

Annual fees are $330.00. Fees are prorated based on the month your application is submitted.

Reduced Dues

Voting Rights

Voting membership may be granted to any individual who earned a professional degree in veterinary medicine form a school or college of veterinary medicine; and shares interest in and supports the purposes of the association; and abides by the AVMA Bylaws, the Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics, and such other policies, rules, and regulations as the Association may adopt.

Affiliate Members

Affiliate membership is available to non-veterinarians who teach veterinary medicine or the sciences allied to veterinary medicine; and those engaged in veterinary research are eligible to apply for affiliate membership. Affiliate membership does not confer voting rights in AVMA elections.

Tax Deductibility

AVMA fees are not tax deductible as charitable contributions. They may be deductible as ordinary and necessary business expenses, however, the estimated 4% that is attributable to AVMA lobbying expenses is not deductible.
