Dr. Bonnie Buntain graduated from the University of Hawaii with a BSc (Honors) and MSc in Animal Sciences, followed by a DVM (Honors) at Colorado State University. Her internship was at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, Large Animal Medicine and Surgery and she later completed her residency at the University of Missouri in Columbia. She was a practice owner (Oahu Equine Veterinary Clinic, Inc.) from 1980 to 1990, and a Diplomate of ABVP (Equine Practice Specialty) with positions within the ABVP Board and as Public Relations committee Chair.
Dr. Buntain has also pursued public practice working within such agencies as the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, USDA National Program Leader Veterinary Extension Service, USDAAPHIS Animal Care Program (Director), APHIS PreHarvest Food Safety Strategic Planning Initiative (Team Leader), the Senior Executive service (top 5% of the federal government) as Director of USDA FSIS Animal Production Food Safety Program, Assistant Deputy Administrator of the Office of Public Health and Science, and finally selected as the first Chief Public Health Veterinarian of FSIS. During that time, Dr. Buntain represented FSIS at AVMA's Council on Public Health and Regulatory Veterinary Medicine as well as Chair of the Food Safety Committee of the USAHA.
She received many honors and awards internal and external to the federal government, including Outstanding Food Safety Veterinarian and Outstanding Woman Veterinarian.
Currently, Dr. Buntain serves on the AVMA Food Safety Advisory Committee and the Council on Public Health and Regulatory Veterinary Medicine. she is on the Expert Advisory Group of the Canadian food Inspection Agency and is the chair of the USAHA Food and Feed Safety committee as well as President of the American Association of Food Safety Veterinarians.
