AVMA Member Directory - Search Tips & Help

  1. Search timing out? Try narrowing your search. The more criteria you enter (i.e., the more fields you fill out or select), the fewer the results, and the faster your search will be.

If you search within broad categories (e.g., all canine practitioners), your search may time out due to an excessively large number of results being returned.

To prevent this, try refining your search by adding more criteria.

  2. The more letters you enter in a field, the more refined your search will be. For example:
    • If you enter "m" in the Last Name field, your search results will contain all available records with last names beginning with "M"
    • If you enter "mi" in the Last Name field, your search results will contain all available records with last names beginning with "Mi"
    • If you enter "m" in the First Name field and "m" in the Last Name box, your search will be limited to all available records with a first name that begins with "M" and a last name that begins with "M"

  3. Names that may contain spaces or apostrophes:
    • When searching for names that contain special prefixes, such as "Mc" in "McCoy" or "Von" in "Von Steuben," try searching for the name both with and without the space. For example, if you are looking for someone named "McCoy" and your search on "McCoy" (with no space) does not bring up the right result, try a new search on "Mc Coy" (including a space).
    • When searching for a name that contains an apostrophe such as "O'Brien," you may also want to try "OBrien" (with no space, and no apostrophe) and "O Brien" (including a space, but no apostrophe).

  4. Use the orange plus-sign icons on the search page to see search fields for educational criteria and professional information.

  5. A search cannot include more than one school selection. For example, you cannot search on both a U.S. veterinary school and an international school in the same search query.

  6. If you select search criteria from both the "State/Province/Other" menu and the "Country" menu, these two selections must match. You can only select a state if the country is the United States, and you may only select a province it the country is Canada.

  7. Additional tips:
    • Nonmember veterinarians are not included in the AVMA Member Directory.
    • Searches are not case-sensitive.
    • There are no "wildcard" search characters such as * and ?.
