The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will host a one-day public workshop on Oct. 2, 2012, in Washington, D.C. that will examine several issues related to pet medications and veterinary prescriptions. This topic is becoming an increasing public policy priority for many veterinary associations. The AVMA has maintained a dialog with the FTC and will participate in the workshop.
However, the FTC is seeking written comments on a number of specific questions by Sept. 14, 2012. The AVMA's comments will only count as one set, so additional comments from veterinary associations and veterinarians will make an impact. For those who cannot attend in person, there will be a live webcast of the event and the FTC plans to take questions via Twitter at #FTCpets.
This is a great opportunity for veterinary medical associations and their members to provide information to federal regulators about their experience with prescription issues and the danger of enacting additional burdensome requirements on veterinary practices. You can find more information about the workshop and the requested comments in this AVMA@Work blog posting:http://atwork.avma.org/2012/07/19/your-chance-to-join-the-pet-meds-discussion/
