Executive Directors Respond to Communications Survey

Posted 14 May 2012

On April 17, 2012, the AVMA Communications Division sent a survey invitation to 66 executive directors of state and allied VMAs. We heard back from 43, a phenomenal 65.2% response rate. Here are some of the things we learned about AVMA communications with the executive directors, as well as how VMAs communicate with their members:

  • Three out of four respondents visit the AVMA website at least once a month, with 44.2% visiting it weekly.
  • AVMA policies (79.1%), state advocacy (72.1%) and federal advocacy (67.4%) were the top three areas or features that were viewed on the AVMA website in the past year.
  • 67.4% of respondents recalled receiving this newsletter, ERC Newslink, by e-mail. Of those respondents, 82.8% accessed the articles and 70.8% shared information that they obtained from the ERC in their association's publications.
  • The main way in which the information from ERC Newslink was shared was in newsletters/publications (93.8%) and e-mail (62.5%).
  • Nearly 9 out of 10 respondents have shared information, besides ERC, that they have found on the AVMA website.
  • Nearly two-thirds of respondents (63.0%) reported that they share press releases received by the AVMA.
  • E-mail is the most common form of communication used by executive directors when interacting with their members, at 97.6%, followed by direct mail (78.0%), Facebook (63.4%), and fax (58.5%).
  • Four out of ten respondents indicated that they were signed up for the AVMA electronic services or sites that were listed. 83.3% of those respondents are signed up for AVMA's Facebook page.
  • 95.1% of respondents are signed up for an AVMA newsletter or alert. Over 70% are signed up for legislative action alerts (73.2%), state legislative updates (73.2%) and ERC Newslink (70.7%).

The Communications Division will be analyzing the data to consider any changes in its methods or tools. Meanwhile, executive directors should know that they can change their preferences about newsletters, action alerts and product information they receive from AVMA at www.avma.org/newsletters. Executive directors of AVMA constituent organizations are assigned a member id and password to access this and other areas of the member-only part of the AVMA website.
