AVMA web site features new information on prescriptions and pharmacies

Two new FAQs posted on the AVMA Web site address questions about prescriptions and pharmacies, a common area of inquiry from members and the public.  One FAQ, targets questions commonly asked by veterinarians, such as:

  • Do I have to give my client a written prescription?
  • Do I have to fulfill a request for a refill when I receive a fax from an internet pharmacy?
  • Is there a way to determine the quality of a pharmacy?
  • Whom should I contact to report a problem with a drug obtained from a pharmacy?

The other FAQ document, is geared to the public, and includes questions such as:

  • What's the difference between the brand name, trade name and generic name of a medication?
  • Why should I consider getting my pet's medications from my veterinarian?
  • What are the risks of ordering from an online pharmacy?
  • My veterinarian said that my pet needs to get a different dose than what the drug package insert says. Is this legal?

Another new document posted on the AVMA Web site, describes how the AVMA Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics and state laws apply to a veterinarian writing a prescription or dispensing a prescription drug outside a Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR). There is a link to a table summarizing the VCPR-Prescription rules in each state .
