Hedgehogs and Salmonella

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have announced a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infection associated with handling African pygmy hedgehogs.

As of January 31, 2013, twenty (20) people in 8 states (AL,IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, OR, WA) have been infected with Salmonella Typhimurium since December 26, 2011. Almost one-third (31%) of the infected people have been hospitalized, and one death has been reported. Almost one-half (42%) of the infected people were ten years of age or younger, emphasizing the need to protect children from infection. The hedgehogs were traced back to multiple breeders in different states.
