Antimicrobial Use and Antimicrobial Resistance

Antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance are hot issues in the news right now, and there's a lot of confusion and misinformation in the media and on the Internet. Antimicrobials, important components of the veterinarian's toolkit, should be used judiciously and in the best interest of animal health and public health.

To better assist members with oversight, stewardship, and judicious use of antimicrobials, the AVMA provides guidance and resources on antimicrobial issues faced by the profession and the sectors it serves.

Furthermore, the AVMA advocates veterinary perspectives on antimicrobial issues and collaborates with stakeholders across animal and human health in advancing antimicrobial stewardship and judicious use to protect animal and public health.

The AVMA continues to work on the critical issues of antimicrobial use and resistance for the betterment of animal and public health. Advised by the Committee on Antimicrobials, the AVMA anticipates additional resource development to assist with member and stakeholder needs.
