Gail C. Golab, PhD, DVM, MACVScDirector, Animal Welfare Division
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Animal Welfare Focus, our quarterly e-newsletter that will keep you up-to-date about animal welfare-related topics and activities and AVMA's science-based advocacy. Feel free to forward this e-newsletter to friends and colleagues, and cite its content in your organizations' newsletters. We're excited about this new endeavor, and hope you find it useful.
The end of 2010 saw the updating of the Veterinarian's Oath to appropriately reflect the profession's ongoing commitment to animal welfare. Mindful of that commitment, the AVMA Animal Welfare Committee and Division are already off and running in 2011.
New and updated backgrounders have been made available on the animal welfare webpages, comments have been submitted on 10 updated and new welfare-related chapters recently released by the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health), two plus days of animal welfare-related programming have been developed for the 2011 AVMA Convention, the Panel on Euthanasia is developing its final draft of the AVMA Guidelines (scheduled to be available for public comment in Summer 2011), members of the Animal Welfare Model Curriculum Planning Group have been appointed and are scheduling their inaugural meeting, and the first in our series of educational videos designed to demystify common procedures and promote good animal welfare practices was released. In addition, the Committee on the Human-Animal Bond, collaborating with Drs. Patterson-Kane and Johnson from the Division, published a commentary on veterinary hospice.
Have an idea for a topic that should be addressed in our e-newsletter? Questions about what the Committees or Division are doing? Please don't hesitate to contact us—we want to hear from you! And – don't forget – members can provide direct input on AVMA animal welfare-related policies. Be sure to visit our member comment page to see what policies are currently being considered by our Animal Welfare Committee.
