Replying to a Colleague on the AVMA Discussion Forum

View printable instructions (PDF)

AVMA’s Online Discussion Forum is a place where AVMA and SAVMA members can tap into a vast network of professional colleagues, and also debate some of the most critical issues facing the AVMA and member veterinarians. If you have expertise or an opinion to contribute to a discussion, please join in and share. That’s how we all grow – and how we harness the collective power of AVMA members to find creative solutions to the tough issues facing our profession.

To post a comment as you are reading a discussion, simply follow these steps:

1.    You must already be signed in to the Discussion Forum on AVMA.org. If you're not sure how to do that, get sign-in help here.

2.    Within any discussion, look for the purple and gray header bar at the top of the discussion (a) or the gray header bar at the top of each reply (b).

3.    At the right side of the header bar, mouse over the curved-arrow icon and quote icon, and you will see tooltips pop up identifying them as the “Reply Post” link (a) and “Reply Post with Quote” link (b), respectively. Click on the Reply Post arrow if you just want to type a reply; click on the Reply Post With Quote icon if you would like to include in your reply a quote from the original discussion or previous comment.

4.    A comment window will open for you to type in your reply. The Subject field should already be filled in with the topic of the discussion. Below that you will see the Message field, and the message or reply on which you are commenting will be below that. If you used the Reply Post icon to reply without quoting from another post, the message field will be blank. Click into the Message field, and type your reply/comment there.

!! IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to copy your message from another program, such as email or Word, copy it first into a text editing program (such as Notepad), then copy it from that program before pasting into the discussion form; otherwise, it might not display in all browsers.

5.    If you used the Reply Post With Comment icon, the message field will contain a formatted quote of the post to which you indicated you wanted to reply, with a gray background.

You may click into the gray quote box to edit the quotation (for example, to quote only a small portion of a larger post). Click below the gray quote area, within the white part of the Message field, to type your own comment/reply.

!! IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to copy your message from another program, such as email or Word, copy it first into a text editing program (such as Notepad), then copy it from that program before pasting into the discussion form; otherwise, it might not display in all browsers.

6.    When you are satisfied with your reply, click on the Post button below the Message field to post your comment to the discussion thread.

7.    If you are not already subscribed to follow the discussion via email, your comment screen will include a checkbox to the right of the “Post” and “Cancel” buttons, offering you the option to be alerted whenever someone post a new reply to this discussion. Make sure that box is checked so you can receive email notifications when anyone posts a comment or reply to your message. This will allow you to reply back directly through your email, without opening a browser and coming to AVMA.org each time.
