Dr. Thomas F. Meyer, AVMA President (2016-2017), and his wife, Dr. Jean Meyer, are co-owners of an AAHA-certified mixed-animal practice in Vancouver, WA. He established Mountain View Veterinary Hospital in 1979, a year after his graduation from Washington State University-College of Veterinary Medicine. In pursuit of his doctor of veterinary medicine degree, he received a master's in zoology from Washington State University in 1973 and a bachelor's in biology from Central Washington State College in 1972.
Meyer served on the AVMA Board of Directors from 2008-2014 and as its chair from 2013-2014. He was chair of the AVMA House Advisory Committee in 2002-2003 and represented private practice-predominately equine on this committee from 1999 to 2007. He served in the AVMA House of Delegates as a delegate or alternative delegate since 1995 and was president of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association (WSVMA) in 1988, as well as honored as its Veterinarian of the Year in 2004. Meyer was the chair of the Washington-Oregon-Idaho (WOI) Steering Committee from 1990-1993 and was the equine representative on the AVMA Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee from 1998-2004. Meyer is an advocate for the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE), an experiential leadership program for students and faculty from across North America that teaches life skills in better communication and collaboration with one another.
