Federal Trade Commission Workshop on Pet Medications Fast Approaching

By Dr. Ashley Morgan, assistant director, AVMA Governmental Relations Division

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) continues to move forward with their plans to host a workshop focused on pet medications in Washington, D.C. on October 2nd.  The AVMA has been actively engaged with the FTC on this issue and will participate in the workshop.

The AVMA also submitted official comments to the FTC’s Federal Register Notice requesting public input on questions they posed related to veterinary medicine and prescription writing. The comment period, originally slated to close Friday, September 14th, has been extended to Thursday, November 1st.  We encourage you to take advantage of the extended comment period and submit your thoughts to the FTC.  At this time, there have been over 300 comments submitted.

The workshop is open to the public and does not require registration.  The meeting will take place on October 2, 2012 at the FTC’s Conference Center, 601 New Jersey Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., from 9am to 5pm.  While there will be no opportunity to publicly comment during the workshop, one can submit questions and comments throughout the workshop via Twitter using the hashtag #FTCpets.   For additional information, please contact the conference organizer, Stephanie Wilkinson, in the FTC’s Office of Policy Planning (petmedsworkshop@ftc.gov or 202-326-2084) or Dr. Ashley Morgan, at the AVMA’s Governmental Relations Division.
