The AVMA Advocate - Bill & Hearing Watch - January 2012
Congress continues to work on key AVMA legislative issues. GRD wants to remind AVMA members that your voice is important. Let your congressional representatives know where you stand!
- H.R. 1406 – Fairness to Pet Owners Act – This legislation would require veterinarians to write a prescription at the time of prescribing a product for a companion animal, regardless of whether or not a client wishes to have their veterinarian dispense the product. AVMA urges the House to consider the burdensome nature of this legislation on veterinary clinics and defeat the bill.
- H.R. 965 – Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act of 2011 – Amends the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act to preserve the effectiveness of medically important antibiotics used in the treatment of human and animal diseases. AVMA opposes this legislation because it would increase animal disease and death. AVMA urges Congress make decisions based upon science when considering legislation concerning the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture.
