2014 Scientific Meeting of the NARMS

Formal Title: [Docket No. FDA-2014-N-0894] 2014 Scientific Meeting of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System; Public Meeting; Request for Comments

Brief Description:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is announcing a public meeting entitled, “2014 Scientific Meeting of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System.” The purpose of the meeting is to discuss progress made in achieving the goals of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) Strategic Plan: 2012-2016.

Excerpt from the AVMA Response:

The AVMA is keenly interested in the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS) and the translation of its surveillance and research data into applicable information for policymakers, animal and public health sectors, and other stakeholders.  In response to the request for comments by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the 2014 Scientific Meeting of the NARMS [Docket No. FDA-2014-N-0894], we stress that there needs to be continued improvement in monitoring systems for antimicrobial resistance patterns from bacterial isolates associated with food animals, foods of animal origin, and human patients.  To better achieve this, the NARMS epidemiological efforts and research focusing on genetic typing and mechanisms of resistance are critical.
