Federal Issue Brief

H.R. 511, To prohibit importation of certain constrictor snakes

PDF filePrinter-friendly version

AVMA Position:

No Action

Introduced by Congressman Tom Rooney (FL-16th) would amend Title 18, United States Code, to prohibit the importation of various injurious species of constrictor snakes.

  • The bill would legislatively add the following constrictors to the list of injurious species: Python molurus, Broghammerus reticulatus, Python sebae, Python natalensis, Boa constrictor, Eunectes notaeus, Eunectes deschauenseei, Eunectes murinus, and Eunectes beniensis.

  • The AVMA is aware of known and potential risks and impacts associated with free-ranging populations of non-native snakes, such as the large constrictors mentioned in this legislation.
  • The AVMA feels that the USFWS should be allowed to undertake normal procedural review in addressing these species, as well as in future instances of potentially listing or delisting species as injurious. This normal procedural review carries the greatest likelihood that rules will be enacted with input from all interested parties and with the best scientific information.
