 H.R. 50 Multinational Species Conservation Fund Reauthorization Act of 2011

Summary:

Introduced by Congressman Don Young (AK), H.R. 50 would authorize appropriations to carry out the African Elephant Conservation Act, the Rhinoceros and Tiger Conservation Act of 1994, and the Asian Elephant Conservation Act of 1997 for FY2012-2016.  

Background:

  • The AVMA is a member of the Multinational Species Coalition that works to gain support for these programs.

Justification:

  • Continued funding for the conservation programs these Acts support is a critical component in protecting these endangered and threatened species from further population reductions and facilitating their survival in their native habitats.

 Current Status:

House Committee on the Natural Resources, Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans, and Insular Affairs. Legislative hearing held on July 28, 2011. Subcommittee mark-up held September 8, 2011.
