America’s horses need your help
When it comes to horses, no one can underestimate the pivotal role they have played in helping to advance society and move us in exciting, new directions. Now, as these beautiful creatures are mostly used for pleasure or show, it is up to us to ensure that they are protected from harm.
At the AVMA, we urge you to support two federal bills that will help ensure the health and welfare of America’s horses.
H.R. 1518/S. 1406 – The Prevent All Soring Tactics (PAST) Act
For more than 40 years, many bad actors within the walking horse show industry have engaged in an inhumane practice known as “soring” to get their walking horses to lift their legs higher and faster in the show ring. This cruel practice, which causes severe physical pain and often irreversible mental damage in horses, needs to be stopped once and for all. The PAST Act will take many important steps to ban this unethical practice--from making the actual act of soring illegal to overhauling the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s oversight and enforcement capabilities so that federal regulators can better take the necessary steps to identify and punish violators. The AVMA, the American Association of Equine Practitioners, all state veterinary medical associations, and a number of horse industry and animal protection organizations agree—we need to pass the PAST Act so that America’s walking horses are better protected from this abuse. H.R. 4440/S. 1459 – The Horse Transportation Safety Act
Horses are often transported in double-decker trailers on the nation’s highways, but these vehicles do not provide the space that horses need to safely and comfortably stand and maintain their balance throughout their trips, resulting in injuries that could have been prevented. This bill will ensure that horses are given the ample headroom they need to safely and humanely travel along the nation’s highways by banning the use of double-decker trailers for transporting horses.
