AVMA Externship Stipend Program

The American Veterinary Medical Association offers assistance to students seeking to broaden their education through externship experiences in diverse areas of veterinary medicine. Through the Externship Stipend Program, the AVMA provides $1,000 stipends (funded by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and American Veterinary Medical Association) to help students alleviate expenses incurred while they perform their externships.

Stipends are awarded each year to students for externships in non-clinical practice settings, with special emphasis on critically under-served areas of veterinary medicine. These may include (but are not limited to):

  • Public practice (e.g., CDC, FDA, USDA, NIH)
  • Industry (e.g., pharmaceutical, diagnostic laboratories, or animal food companies)
  • Research

Stipends are awarded each year to students for externships in food supply veterinary practice settings.  These may include (but are not limited to):

  • Dairy
  • Beef
  • Swine
  • Poultry

These experiences add breadth to students' perspectives and make them better advocates for their patients and their profession.

To be eligible for the program, a student must:

  • Be at least a second year veterinary student
  • Be a Student Chapter/Associate AVMA member in good standing
  • Candidates secure their own externship and present their plan as part of the stipend application process

Deadline to submit the application is January 15, 2016.
