AVMA Headquarters Externships

The AVMA Headquarters Externship program helps students who would like to explore the opportunities of organized veterinary medicine. This externship is open to all students who are current members of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA). The AVMA provides 10 stipends up to $2,000* for externships lasting between 3-4 weeks. With 5 of those stipends dedicated specifically just for students interested in working directly with the Economics Division. Student participants can spend their whole externship in one division or divide their time among various divisions, depending on choice, time, and availability.

The work a student extern could expect at AVMA Headquarters is varied and differs from division to division.  However, excellent written and verbal communication skills are a major asset for an extern.  Examples of experience learned at the AVMA may include: assisting in document and/or letter writing, developing content for the AVMA website, participation in council/committee meetings held at AVMA Headquarters or elsewhere, providing information to AVMA members, performing background research and collecting data on current veterinary issues.

Students are able to select from AVMA divisions that are of most interest to them. These divisions include:
  • Animal Welfare
  • MarCom (Marketing and Communications)
  • Convention and Meeting Planning
  • Education and Research
  • Membership and Field Services
  • Animal and Public Health
  • Veterinary Economics
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • AVMF
(More information about each division is included within the application.)

Requirements:

  • Be a current Student Chapter/Associate AVMA member in good standing
  • Secure own housing and transportation arrangements (local information will be supplied)
  • All current veterinary students are eligible to apply

Application deadline to submit is January 20, 2017.

"The AVMA is the organization to represent and protect the field of veterinary medicine. It’s definitely been a unique way to practice vetmed but the work being done at the AVMA is of the utmost importance. I am very grateful to have been selected for this incredible opportunity. I am proud to say that my work here over the past four weeks will aid in advocacy efforts and help advance biomedical research!"
