AVMA Headquarters Externships

The AVMA Headquarters Externship stipend program helps students who would like to explore the opportunities of organized veterinary medicine. This externship is open to all students who are members of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA). The AVMA provides five stipends up to $2,000 (funded by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation) for externships lasting between 3-4 weeks. Student participants can spend their whole externship in one division or divide their time among various divisions, depending on choice, time, and availability.

The work a student extern could expect at AVMA Headquarters is varied and differs from division to division.  However, excellent written and verbal communication skills are a major asset for an extern.  Examples of experience learned at the AVMA may include: assisting in document and/or letter writing, developing content for the AVMA website. participation in council/committee meetings held at AVMA Headquarters or possibly elsewhere, providing information to AVMA members, performing background research and collecting data on current veterinary issues.

Students are able to select from AVMA divisions that are of most interest to them. These divisions include:
  • Animal Welfare
  • MarCom (Marketing and Communications)
  • Convention and Meeting Planning
  • Education and Research
  • Membership and Field Services
  • Scientific Activities
  • Veterinary Economics
  • American Veterinary Medical Foundation
(Further explanations on each division are included within the application)

Please check back in the Fall for the 2016-2017 application!

"Whether or not a student is considering a future in veterinary governance, the externship at AVMA headquarters is invaluable. Regardless of future career aspirations, it is essential to acknowledge the importance of this governing body and to understand the decision-making process that guides our profession."
-- Michael White, 2012 HQ extern
