Participating in an IVSA Exchange in the U.S.

Dear International Exchange Applicant,

As the two International Exchange Officers representing the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA), we are very happy to be able to assist you in your search for a veterinary exchange opportunity in the United States. The U.S. is a vast nation with unlimited opportunities to learn and grow as a future veterinarian serving the animals and people of the world. We do hope that you will be able to find the type of experience you are looking for to further your veterinary medical training, and to grow both personally and professionally in this exceptional field of work.

There are two ways in which we can assist you in your search for an exchange.

1. There is a list of U.S. veterinarians who have agreed to host international students at their practice. If the interests indicated on your IVSA Exchange Application match with what one of these clinics offer, we will try to arrange an exchange. You and the clinic will be responsible for setting up all the details of your visit, we will arrange the original. Please first fill out an IVSA Exchange Application form, and send it to the SAVMA International Exchange Officer. From there, we will contact you with a list of potential host clinics and we will only send your application to the clinics of your choice.

2. There is a list of externship websites based on species of interest or type of practice that you can use to research a clinic for your exchange. For those not familiar with the term "externship", this means a 2-6 week focused clinical experience in a veterinary practice. You will be solely responsible for contacting the institution(s) and filling out individual externship application requirements. These application requirements will vary from institution to institution. This list will be continually updated as new information becomes available. Opportunities can be found in the section entitled "Exchange Opportunities for International Veterinary Students".

In either case, once details of your exchange have been arranged, please contact us to let us know when and where you will be visiting so that we may keep records of your exchange in order to further assist you and other future exchange applicants.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at any point during your search process if you need extra assistance or if you have any additional questions. We look forward to working with you and to helping you find a great opportunity in the U.S. to gain experience in the highest quality of veterinary medicine!

Sincerely,
The SAVMA International Exchange Officers
