Dr. Helfat graduated with a B.A. from Wesleyan University (1973) and with a D.V.M. from Cornell University (1977).He worked for two years in Amsterdam, N.Y. for a mixed practice. In 1979 he moved to New Jersey where he joined the Bryan Animal Hospital in Mt. Holly (mixed practice). Two years later, he became an owner. In 1995 he founded the Larchmont Animal Hospital in Mt. Laurel where he still works full time.In 1979, Dr. Helfat joined the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association. As a continuous member of NJVMA he has served on numerous committees and has served as Vice President, President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past-President. He also has served as one of the NJVMA delegates to the AVMA House of Delegates (2002-2011). Dr. Helfat served on the NJVMA Executive Board for 25 years. Dr. Helfat has been a member of the South Jersey VMA since 1980, serving for 7 years as their representative on the NJVMA Executive Board. Dr. Helfat was a member of SAVMA and SCAVMA during veterinary school. He has been a continuous member of the AVMA since graduation in 1977. Besides serving as one of the New Jersey delegates to the AVMA House of Delegates for 9 years (2002-2011) he was elected to the AVMA House Advisory Committee in 2003 and served 7 years. As Chair of the AVMA House Advisory Committee he served one year on the AVMA Executive Board and participated twice in the AVMA Executive Board budget review process. Dr. Helfat participated in the 2009 AVMA Bylaws revision, and with staff and the AVMA House Advisory Committee, revised the AVMA Manual for the House of Delegates.Dr. Helfat has chaired all 7 of the AVMA House of Delegates Reference Committees. Dr. Helfat has brought various resolutions and Bylaws amendments to the floor of the AVMA House of Delegates as well.In 2011, Dr. Helfat was elected as the AVMA District II representative to the AVMA Board of Directors (6 year term).During his service on the Board he has served on the Board liaison to the Aquatic Veterinary Medicine Committee, the Animal Welfare Committee, the Committee for Human-Animal Interaction, the Governance Performance Review Committee, the Judicial Council, the Council on Education Candidate Qualification Selection Committee, the Board Bylaws Committee (Chair 2013,2014), the Board Governance Task Force (Chair), the Board Audit Committee (Chair 2014), the Legislative Advisory Committee (Chair 2015-2017), the Strategic Management Process Core Team, the two AVMA Advisory Panels, the Board Governance Committee and the AVMA Board of Governors. In 2015 Dr. Helfat was elected Board Vice Chair and in August of 2016 Dr. Helfat was elected Board Chair.Dr. Helfat has made numerous Capitol Hill visits on behalf of AVMA and in conjunction with the AVMA Governmental Relations Division.He is an active member of the Delaware VMA, Maryland VMA, New York State VMS, New Jersey VMA, Pennsylvania VMA, and Virginia VMA.He has received numerous awards including the NJVMA President’s Award twice, the NJVMA Service Award, the South Jersey Veterinarian of the Year Award, the Friend of 4-H Award, the AVMA Certificate of Appreciation on four occasions, and the Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association’s President’s Award (2016). He has served as alumni President for Cornell’s chapter of Alpha Psi Fraternity and as a delegate to the New Jersey Agricultural Convention. He also served 2 terms on the Board of the Cornell Alumni Veterinary Association.Dr. Helfat lives in Lumberton, NJ with is wife Mendy, numerous dogs, cats, rabbits, and chickens. In his free moments, he plays golf.
