Dr. Mark P. Helfat is a mixed-animal veterinarian who practices in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. He graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in 1977. Following graduation, he worked for two years in Amsterdam, N.Y. In 1979, he joined the Bryan Animal Hospital in Mount Holly, New Jersey where he became an owner after two years. In 1995, Dr. Helfat founded the Larchmont Animal Hospital in Mount Laurel where he still works full time.
Dr. Helfat was a member of Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) and the Student Chapter of the AVMA during veterinary school, and he has been a continuous member of AVMA since graduation. He served as a New Jersey delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates for nine years, and he was elected to the AVMA House Advisory Committee (HAC) in 2003 where he served seven years, including one year as chair. Dr. Helfat has chaired seven AVMA House of Delegates Reference Committees.
In 2011, Dr. Helfat was elected to a six-year term as the AVMA District II representative to the AVMA Executive Board.
Dr. Helfat is active in the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA), where he has served as vice president, president and on its executive board for 25 years. Dr. Helfat has been a member of the South Jersey VMA since 1980, serving on its executive board and as its president. He is an active member of the Delaware VMA, Maryland VMA, New York State VMS, New Jersey VMA, Pennsylvania VMA, and Virginia VMA.
He has received numerous awards including the NJVMA President's Award twice, the NJVMA Service Award, the South Jersey Veterinarian of the Year Award, the Friend of 4-H Award, and the AVMA Certificate of Appreciation on four occasions.
Dr. Helfat lives in Lumberton, NJ with his wife Mendy and numerous dogs, cats, rabbits, and chickens.
