Convention Education Program Committee - Entity Description


The CEPC is responsible for identifying and programming high quality educational opportunities at the AVMA Annual Convention. Programming developed by the CEPC integrates with convention programming developed by AVMA staff to implement Board of Directors-approved AVMA strategic initiatives and objectives. The CEPC will collaborate with AVMA Convention and Meeting Planning Division (CMPD) staff and associated entities, allied groups and others as needed to enhance educational diversity and support mutual objectives of the AVMA.

The CEPC will develop continuing education programs within their assigned sections that is top-tier and innovative. Programs will be delivered through, but not limited to:

  • Presentations
  • Facilitated Training
  • Peer-to-Peer Experiences
  • Research Dissemination
  • Interactive Laboratories
  • Exhibit Hall Educational Experiences

CEPC Section Managers are responsible for subject matter, reviewing proposals submitted to AVMA through its call for proposal process, evaluating proposals through an online system, and conferring with AVMA CMPD staff and other Section Managers to produce a cohesive program they believe should be accepted for the convention. Section Managers also oversee the annual appointment of Content Coordinators and maintain expenses within the approved section budget.

Section Managers and their designated Content Coordinators will evaluate speaker presentation materials and sessions on-site, and serve as a moderator in various sessions.

The CEPC Chair and Chair-Elect approve submitted CEPC programming based on recommendations from Section Managers. The CEPC Chair and Chair-Elect will collaborate with AVMA CMPD staff to coordinate and integrate the CEPC program with the AVMA programming to deliver a seamless AVMA convention education program. The CEPC and AVMA staff may also collaborate with allied organizations and others to develop programming.

Membership, Method of Appointment, and Representation

The Committee shall consist of a Chair, a Chair-Elect, a non-voting Board of Directors (BOD) Liaison, and eight members (Section Managers) representing the following areas:

  • Companion Animal
  • Food Animal/Equine
  • Poultry Medicine
  • Professional Development
  • Public and Corporate Practice
  • Interactive Laboratories
  • Veterinary Technician

The Chair (or their designee) from the Veterinary Economics Steering Committee (VESC) will also serve on the CEPC as a voting member of the committee, and will be responsible for oversight of the practice management educational program.

Committee members can serve up to two, three year terms (inclusive of the Chair and Chair-Elect if applicable) as appointed by the AVMA BOD, with the exception of the Poultry Medicine Section Manager. The Poultry Medicine Section Manager is nominated by the American Association of Avian Pathologists (AAAP). The AVMA BOD may appoint or reject the AAAP appointee.

Nominations for incoming Section Managers are approved by the AVMA BOD at their November meeting prior to the start of the Section Manager's term. Incoming Section Managers will begin their term at the Annual Convention CEPC meeting immediately following their appointment.


The AVMA BOD appoints the Chair and the Chair-Elect and they each serve one, one-year term. Once the Chair has completed his/her term, the Chair-Elect assumes the position of Chair and a new Chair-Elect is selected. Both the Chair and Chair-Elect must be AVMA members. The committee Chair may not serve as a Section Manager during his/her term as Chair, but the Chair-Elect may serve as a Section Manager.

The Chair's primary responsibility is to evaluate the continuing education program from a comprehensive perspective, identifying areas of common interest between the programs/sections; avoiding duplication or conflicting programming; and ensuring a seamless delivery of programming.

Section Managers

The AVMA BOD appoints each Section Manager. Section Managers select, appoint, and chair a subcommittee of Content Coordinators for their Section. Content Coordinators are responsible for organizing specific subsections of the convention. A total of 35 Content Coordinators are approved to assist the Section Managers. Each Content Coordinator serves a one-year renewable term, not to exceed two consecutive terms.


The Committee reports to the AVMA BOD.


The CEPC may have regular teleconference meetings to accomplish its charge. It also has the following in-person meetings:

  1. Summer, onsite at the conclusion of the Annual Convention
  2. Winter/Spring, at AVMA Headquarters


The Chair, Chair-Elect, and both current and incoming Section Managers attending the convention are reimbursed:

  • round trip coach airfare between the commercial airport at the convention city and at the city nearest the committee member's residence
  • meals
  • ground transportation
  • lodging expenses

All committee members (and one guest of CEPC member) receive a complimentary convention registration.

Travel expenses related to other scheduled meetings of the Committee will be reimbursed in accordance with standing AVMA policy.

Life Expectancy

The Committee will be reviewed in compliance with AVMA governance policies.
