Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee

Charge/Objective

The Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee serves as an advisory committee to the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents to ensure wide species-based, veterinary practitioner input on issues of biologic and therapeutic agents including but not limited to drug availability, distribution, use and residue control, and on quality assurance for products of food animal origin.

Membership, representation, and method of appointment

The committee will consist of members who are representatives from the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents; the American Animal Hospital Association; the American Association of Avian Pathologists; the American Association of Bovine Practitioners; the American Association of Equine Practitioners; the American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners; the American Association of Swine Veterinarians; the American Association of Feline Practitioners; American Association of Fish Veterinarians; zoo, wildlife, and aquarium medicine; and the Student AVMA (SAVMA).

Each practice sector organization represented on CPAC will nominate two clinical practitioners to serve as its representative and alternate representative. The SAVMA will also nominate and approve two SAVMA members to serve as its representative and alternate representative. The alternate representative will serve when the primary representative is unavailable. The AVMA Board of Directors will consider and appoint the representative for each organization, but may reject a nominee for cause and request the nominating organization to nominate another member.

The AVMA Board of Directors will appoint the primary and alternate representative for zoo, wildlife, and aquarium medicine from among nominees solicited from the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and the American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians.

Appointments of all practice-sector representatives will be for three years, and appointments of the SAVMA representatives will be for one year; but, any represented organization may request that its representative be terminated early and nominate a replacement to fill the unexpired term. Practice-sector representatives may serve a maximum of two, three-year terms. SAVMA representatives may serve a maximum of two, one-year terms. Each year, the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents will appoint its representative and an alternate representative for a one-year term.

Chair

The member of the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents that serves as a member of the Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee will serve as the chair of the Clinical Practitioners Advisory Committee.

Meetings

The committee is authorized to hold one in-person meeting per year at AVMA headquarters and may meet virtually as needed to fulfill its charge.

Funding

The AVMA will reimburse committee members for authorized expenses.

Reports

The committee reports its activities and makes recommendations for action to the Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents.

Life expectancy

The committee will be reviewed in compliance with AVMA governance policies.
