- The Animal Welfare-Human Animal Bond Committee accumulates information
regarding the responsibility of the Student AVMA regarding issues
related to the welfare of animals and the bond between animals and
people. The goal of the committee is to disseminate this wealth of
knowledge to all Student Chapters of the AVMA. One committee member
represents SAVMA by serving on the AVMA Human Animal Bond Committee and
another serves as a contact to the Animal Welfare Division of the AVMA.
The committee also honors two SAVMA members that demonstrate an
understanding and appreciation of the human-animal bond and the welfare
of animals via an annual essay contest.

|
- The Committee on Communications presents ideas and suggestions on ways
to enhance communication among the Student AVMA and its student
chapters, to promote communication among all veterinary students in the
United States and Canada, to promote veterinary medicine in the
community and to encourage membership in the Student AVMA and the
Student Chapters of the AVMA. The Committee administers the Student AVMA
National Veterinary Medical Teaching Excellence Awards that are designed
to reward teaching excellence. A Committee member acts as an ex-officio
representative to the AVMA Council on Public Relations.
|
|
21
|
- The Economics, Finance and Management Committee work to promote the
education of current economic issues facing the veterinary industry. We
maintain a liaison with the National Commission for Veterinary Economic
Issues and promote opportunities for student personal and professional
development by serving as a resource to SCAVMA chapters and veterinary
school business clubs. Our flagship program is to award new and existing
business clubs for excellence. The recipients are chosen and announced
at the SAVMA symposium.
|
|

|
- The Education and Licensure Committee addresses issues of concern to
students and serves as a source of current and accurate information
concerning state licensing requirements for veterinarians. To provide
input and remain current with changing requirements, the Committee works
closely with the American Association of Veterinary State Boards. One
goal is to promote changes that make licensing as expedient as possible
for graduating veterinary students such as licensure by endorsement and
standardized national exams.
The Committee is also the Student AVMA's liaison with the
American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges, a body of educators
that works to improve the quality of veterinary education. The Committee
encourages the development and refinement of veterinary educational
programs at veterinary schools in the United States to provide the best
possible education.
|
|
23
|
- The Emerging Issues Committee acts as a resource/contact/information
center for emerging issues in the profession which affect veterinary
students. While some issues rapidly appear and disappear, other
established "emerging" issues remain current hot topics among
the veterinary profession. The Committee is a dynamic entity that is
currently serving in four main areas:
- Ecological health
- Public health
- Non-traditional career paths
- Bioterrorism and agro-terrorism
|
|
24
|
- The Government Affairs Committee serves as the Student AVMA liaison to
the AVMA Governmental Relations Division in Washington D.C.. The
Committee informs veterinary students of pending and approved
legislation that affects the veterinary profession and its students. The
GAC encourages and promotes the involvement of veterinary students in
the legislative process.
|
|
25
|
- The IVEC promotes the advancement of veterinary education and animal
welfare throughout the world. The committee facilitates individual,
cultural and educational exchanges through the recruitment of
veterinarians and veterinary students to participate in international
student exchange programs. The committee also distributes information
about the activities of the International Veterinary Student Association
and encourages local chapters to be involved in international
activities. The committee works closely with the SAVMA International
Exchange Officer. The committee also distributes scholarships and grants
to promote international exchanges.
|
|
26
|
- The Multicultural Student Outreach (MSO) Committee communicates and
addresses the concerns of our diversifying student body to the SAVMA
House of Delegates, strives to educate students about the importance of
diversity and multicultural competency within our profession and
provides public awareness of the multifaceted field of veterinary
medicine. Current projects include:
- A Diversity Grant Application for start up outreach organizations or
events
- Planning a Multicultural Outreach Forum for the SAVMA Symposium 2007
|
|
27
|
- The Native American Project Committee coordinates student externships
for veterinary students wishing to work with Navajo Nation Veterinary
Program in Arizona. This position enables students to assist with
implementation of veterinary programs offered on the reservation and
provides them with the opportunity to experience some of the cultural
aspects of Navajo life.
The clinic treats small and large animals, and the exact case
load varies with the season. The Navajo Nation Veterinary Program also
works with the Navajo Nation Zoo in Window Rock. Housing is available
for externs; it is spartan, but adequate. Each year the Student AVMA
grants an externship and report on their experiences.
|
|
28
|
- The Symposium Committee is charged with the responsibility to keep the
Student AVMA Educational Symposium rules and guidelines current and to
aid in the transfer of information among hosting schools. The Symposium
is a major event designed to expose students to areas of veterinary
medicine that are not usually covered in their regular curricula and
promote friendships among future colleagues. The Symposium is held at a
different veterinary school each spring. Schools interested in hosting
the Symposium make bid presentations at the spring House of Delegate's
meeting two years prior to the year they plan to host the Symposium. The
winner is voted on by the House of Delegates.
- *This committee is reserved for the delegates of schools hosting the
SAVMA Symposiums.
|
|
29
|
- The OHC committee is based on the ‘one health, one medicine’ philosophy
and embraces SAVMA’s desire to play an active role in this new
interdisciplinary movement. World
Rabies Day has been the most notable event the OHC has been involved in.
- * This committee is still in the ad-hoc stage and may become a permanent
committee in the near future. But as for now, it runs on a volunteer
basis with delegates from other committees donating their time and
ideas.
