Veterinary involvement in any animal-assisted activity, animal-assisted therapy, or resident animal program is important to ensure that the health and welfare of humans and animals are protected. Key components are presented for successful use of animals in these programs such as interdisciplinary cooperation, supervision, and animal selection. In addition, a checklist is provided to help you establish a new program or enhance an existing one.
