AVMA Fellows will provide veterinary expertise in House, Senate offices
Washington, D.C. — Today, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) announced the placement of its 2011-2012 Fellows, Drs. Matthew Doyle, R. Reid Harvey and Richard Smilie, with the offices of Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), respectively
During the yearlong tenure, the fellows will provide science-based expertise and knowledge on a variety of policy issues related to agriculture, appropriations, food safety and health care.
Individual placements are:
- Matthew Doyle, DVM, MPH, accepted a position in the office of Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Conn.), where he will work on health-care, food-safety, public-health and agricultural issues. Rep. DeLauro is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. Dr. Doyle is a 2008 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Doyle is a former AVMA Governmental Relations Division extern and was a small-animal practitioner at Roose Animal Hospital in Plymouth, Mich., prior to accepting the fellowship.
- R. Reid Harvey, DVM, MPH, will work on agriculture, health, emergency-preparedness and Farm Bill issues for the office of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.). Dr. Harvey is a 2010 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee. Prior to accepting the fellowship, Dr. Harvey worked as a small-animal intern at a 24-hour emergency and referral hospital in Gaithersburg, Md.
- Richard Smilie, DVM, MS, will spend his fellowship year in the office of Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), working on health-care and agricultural issues. Dr. Smilie is a 1989 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. Dr. Smilie is the owner of the Santiam Veterinary Clinic, a mixed-animal practice in rural Oregon.
"The AVMA Fellowship is recognized in congressional offices as being a competitive program that brings top veterinarians to Capitol Hill," said Dr. Mark Lutschaunig, AVMA Governmental Relations Department director. "These veterinarians will be the go-to experts providing decision-makers with science-based expertise, all while serving the veterinary profession."
