The health of our nation's pets is at risk. Data demonstrates that our pets are not currently receiving proper preventive care which can lead to serious health complications. This is evidenced by a decreasing number of pet visits to the veterinarian in contrast with an increasing pet population. As such, over the past five years, there has been an increase in some of the most common, and often preventable, health conditions affecting dogs and cats.

New results from the second phase of the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study, evaluating how veterinarians are addressing the decline of companion animal veterinary visits, will be. The new research follows the first phase of the Bayer Veterinary Care Usage Study, which included a survey conducted among pet owners that identified six factors instrumental in the reduction of veterinary visits over the past several years.

Therapy Pets and Infectious Disease Risks

Animal assisted activities (AAAs) are becoming very popular in healthcare facilities, but the benefits must be weighed against the potential infectious disease risks for each patient and animal involved. What types of animals make suitable therapy pets, how they should be managed (including the risks of feeding raw diets), and what kinds of patient-animal contact should be allowed are all important considerations for reducing the risk of pathogen transmission between patients and therapy pets.

This session highlights the efforts of a USDA grant-funded project to develop a curriculum and supply continuing education materials for the improvement of veterinary services and animal agriculture in Iraq. The delivery methods used were designed to give participants continued access to the materials. A library of lectures, in both English and Arabic, were created and made available online. Live sessions were conducted using videoconferencing technologies to enable real-time collaboration with the content experts.

Early Veterinary Support to the Space Program

This presenter discusses the Veterinary support to US space research during the late 1940's, through the early 1960's. Specific attention is paid to the development of rocket science based on the input of German Rocket Scientists and the German V-2 rocket technology developed during WWII; the early US rocket development using animals as test subjects to determine the effects of a variety of unknowns related to the entry into space, and the preparation of space vehicles to support man in space flight. The presenter provides personal experiences relating to the NASA Project Mercury flights with Chimpanzees as the test subjects and having served as the Launch Veterinarian for the Mercury Redstone 2 flight with the chimpanzee 'HAM' as the test subject which paved the way for the flight of Astronaut Alan Shepard in 1961.

This session discusses the procedures involved in removing and managing animals seized during raids on clandestine methamphetamine laboratories. Includes planning, physical removal, triage, decontamination, and evaluation of animals once they are removed from the site. Physical and behavioral effects of animal exposure to methamphetamine and compounds used in its manufacture is also discussed.

When the tsunami of Christmas 2004 hit the countries surrounding the Indian Ocean, thousands of miles of coastline were left in shambles. Now, some six years later, community life is getting back to normal, with livestock providing nutrition and draft power, crops providing market opportunity along with the re-establishment of traditional fishing practices.
