One Health Commission to be housed at Iowa State
Schaumburg, IL — The One Health Commission (OHC), a globally focused organization dedicated to improving the health of people, animals and the environment, has established headquarters at Iowa State University (ISU).
"This important move provides not only a leading partner for the One Health Commission but also a permanent home and initial staff support," said Dr. Roger Mahr, chief executive officer of the OHC and a former president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). "Iowa State University's strong interdisciplinary leadership and its One Health consortium will provide the support needed to become fully operational."
The One Health concept is the intersection of human, animal and ecosystem health. Nearly 75 percent of all emerging diseases in people worldwide are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted from animals to humans. Zoonotic diseases include Rabies, West Nile virus, and HIV/AIDS.
The One Health concept gained momentum under the leadership of Dr. Mahr when he made it an integral theme of his AVMA Presidency. He oversaw AVMA establishment of One Health Initiative Task Force, which developed into the One Health Commission.
Members of the One Health Commission currently include the AVMA, American Medical Association, American Public Health Association, Association of Academic Health Centers, Association of American Medical Colleges, Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, and the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.
