AVMA seeks leaders for new task force, Vision Commission

— The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) is looking for volunteer leaders to fill positions on two important new boards: the Task Force on AVMA Programs for Students and Recent Graduates and the AVMA 20/20 Vision Commission.

"As we solicit nominations to fill these two new entities, we must remember that diversity in the leadership of a membership organization is essential," explains AVMA President Dr. Larry R. Corry. "We need to draw leaders onto this new commission and task force from every sector of our profession and also from different backgrounds. That way, we can continue to ensure that our association makes decisions and creates services and programs that truly reflect the needs, desires and interests of our members."

The AVMA Executive Board, the association's top governing body, approved the creation of the commission and task force at its January 8 meeting.

The Task Force on AVMA Programs for Students and Recent Graduates will aid the AVMA in reviewing current programs and developing a strategic plan for involvement with veterinary students and recent graduates.

"The AVMA has had a long tradition of supporting students, from student chapters and externships to scholarships," says Dr. Kevin Dajka, director of the AVMA Membership and Field Services Division. "In an effort to continue meeting the needs of today's students and new graduates, the AVMA feels it is critical to review the programs we currently support, identify new areas of opportunity and gather input from current students, recent graduates, faculty and veterinarians. We look forward to receiving nominations from veterinarians who are interested in making an impact on the profession."

The charge of the AVMA 20/20 Vision Commission is to create a progressive vision for the future of the AVMA. This commission will ensure that the association's programs, strategies, communications and other entities will continue to be relevant and responsive to its members and the general public 6-10 years into the future.

"If the AVMA is to continue to lead the veterinary profession through the year 2020, we need to be prepared for the changes and advancements ahead," explains Dr. Ron DeHaven, AVMA chief executive officer. "The AVMA is an association that was established for the members and is run by the members. We're looking for nominations of highly qualified veterinarians from across the profession and across the country to help us achieve our goals."

All nominations for both entities must be received by March 15, 2010, and should include a one-to-two page resume.

Information and details about the task force and commission, as well as applications, are available at http://www.avma.org/about_avma/governance/volunteering/vacancies.asp. For additional information about the task force, please contact Dr. Dajka or phone 847-285-6678. For questions about the commission, please contact the Office of the Executive Vice President or phone 847-285-6605.
