AVMA appoints Dr. Elizabeth Sabin to staff coordinator of international affairs

— As part of its continuing effort to improve and expand the association's international relationships, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has appointed Dr. Elizabeth Sabin to the new post of staff coordinator of international affairs.

As staff coordinator of international affairs, Dr. Sabin will be responsible for helping strengthen the AVMA's international partnerships by working with the World Veterinary Association and other similar groups, and she will serve as the staff consultant to the AVMA Committee on International Veterinary Affairs. In addition, Dr. Sabin will continue as an assistant director in the association's Education and Research Division.

"I think it's an excellent idea for the association to continue and increase our involvement with our brother and sister organizations around the world to form productive partnerships on shared interests," Dr. Sabin says. "I'm very proud to have been chosen to take on this new role at the AVMA, and through this work I hope to oversee global efforts that will benefit veterinary medicine and education, food safety, public health, the association and our members."

Dr. Sabin joined the AVMA in 1998, and since 2001 she has served as assistant director in the AVMA's Education and Research Division. She serves as the staff consultant to the Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates and the Council on Research, and as secondary staff consultant to the Council on Education and the American Board of Veterinary Specialties.

"Dr. Sabin is the perfect person to oversee the AVMA's growing international partnerships. She has a great deal of experience in international affairs and a personal interest in this field," says Dr. Ron DeHaven, chief executive officer of the AVMA. "Through her hard work and dedication to the field of veterinary medicine, I am confident that she will help bring about productive partnerships that will help this association best serve the interests of our members, animal and public health and the general public."

Dr. Sabin is a 1992 graduate of the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She earned a Ph.D. degree in immunology in 1997 from Cornell University, completing a portion of her research in Brazil at the Federal University of Bahía. She has done research at the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases in Nairobi, Kenya, and has also worked in Naples, Italy, studying canine leishmaniasis. Since joining the AVMA, Dr. Sabin participated in the 2004 International Veterinary Conference in Kuwait City, and in 2005 she served on the AVMA/AAVMC Joint Task Force on Veterinary Infrastructure in Iraq and Afghanistan. In September 2007, Dr. Sabin was honored to participate in the First Annual Afghanistan Veterinary Association Convention.
