Matushek named editor-in-chief, director of AVMA Publications Division
 Dr. Kurt Matushek
Schaumburg, IL — Dr. Kurt J. Matushek, a 16-year member of the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) publications team, has been named the new editor-in-chief and director of the Publications Division.
Dr. Matushek, who succeeds the late Dr. Janis H. Audin, served as interim editor-in-chief since March of this year and will be responsible for the daily operations and overall content of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) and the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR), two of the most respected veterinary journals in the world.
"As a former practitioner and board-certified veterinary surgeon, Dr. Matushek will ensure that we continue to bring the practitioners' perspective to JAVMA," AVMA Chief Executive Officer Dr. W. Ron DeHaven said upon announcing Dr. Matushek's promotion. "Combined with his years of service to the AVMA as an associate editor, he will also make sure that both JAVMA and AJVR maintain their international reputation as the premier veterinary journals."
"I have no doubt that Dr. Matushek will do a great job in providing leadership to an incredible group of professionals in our Publications Division," Dr. DeHaven added.
Dr. Matushek earned his veterinary degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1983. Immediately after graduation, he studied the use of external skeletal fixation in dogs at the Ontario Veterinary College, where he earned a master's degree. After spending a year in general small animal practice near Chicago, he returned to Ontario and completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery. He then finished a small animal surgical residency in Madison, Wis., followed by two years as staff surgeon at a small animal practice in Michigan.
Dr. Matushek, a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, began his tenure with the AVMA in 1992 as an assistant editor and became associate editor five years later.
"I am excited by this tremendous opportunity," Dr. Matushek said. "The AVMA journals are among the most prestigious and widely known veterinary journals in the world, and I look forward to building on that success."
