Remembering the heroes of 9/11
The following photographs were provided by members of the canine search-and-rescue teams and AVMA Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams deployed in response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Most are grainy or out of focus, others are underexposed. Many freeze the frenetic activity at what remained of the World Trade Center, providing a glimpse of the human and canine responders at work—and rest—amid the devastation as well as those who cared for them. The series also illustrates the powerful bond between search and rescue dogs and their handlers.

A 100-year legacy of promoting animal health
Started in New York City in 1910, the Animal Medical Center is today reportedly the world's largest companion animal hospital and just as committed to providing compassionate care and preserving the human-animal bond as it was a century ago.
