Event: 102nd annual meeting, June 25-28, Destin, Fla.
Awards: Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Dwight F. Wolfe, Auburn, for commitment of time and energy and for achievements and contributions toward the advancement of veterinary medicine. A 1977 graduate of Auburn University, Dr. Wolfe is a professor and acting head of the Department of Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at Auburn University. A diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists, his research interests include testicular degeneration in bulls, bovine urogenital surgery, neonatal uterine development, and bovine and small ruminant clinical theriogenology. Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Barbara F. Monaghan, Birmingham. A 1991 graduate of Auburn University, Dr. Monaghan is a partner at two veterinary hospitals in Birmingham. A past president of the Alabama VMA, she chairs the AVMA Council on Veterinary Service. Dr. Monaghan also serves as a board member of the Alumni Advisory Council for the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine. Lay Person of the Year: James C. Lasker, MD, Birmingham, for outstanding volunteer endeavors to promote the human-animal bond. An oncologist at Birmingham Hematology and Oncology, Dr. Lasker has helped increase awareness and funding for animal-assisted therapy. Service Award: Drs. Robert E. Pitman, Athens; Philip E. Gleason Jr., Birmingham; Jerome B. Williams, Birmingham; and William G. Bledsoe, Camden. A 1975 graduate of Auburn University, Dr. Pitman was instrumental in initiating the Alabama Veterinary Medical Foundation's spay and neuter license plate program. Dr. Gleason received his DVM degree from Auburn University in 1997 and has been active with the Jefferson County VMA, serving two terms as president. A 1969 graduate of Tuskegee University, Dr. Williams has chaired the Alabama VMA Wellness Committee for several years, working to upgrade the program. Dr. Bledsoe received his DVM degree from Auburn University in 1981 and serves as western Alabama's representative to the association's executive board, also chairing its Resolution Committee for several years and serving on the Constitution, Bylaws, and Practice Act Committee for eight years. Special Award: Dr. T.C. Branch, Birmingham. A 1981 graduate of Tuskegee University, Dr. Branch was honored for his work with the Alabama VMF's spay and neuter license plate program.
