Deserving nominees wanted for AVMA awards

Nominations are invited for the 2010 veterinary achievement awards offered by the AVMA and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation recognizing individuals who have advanced the science and art of veterinary medicine, and shown exemplary concern for the welfare and humane treatment of animals. The awards will be presented at the 147th AVMA Annual Convention, July 31-Aug. 3 in Atlanta.
Two of the research awards were reinstated this year through the AVMF and the AVMA Council on Research collaborating with the American Kennel Club and the Winn Feline Foundation. Rejoining two other research awards are the AVMF/AKC Career Achievement Award in Canine Research and the AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Research Award.
The following awards are open for nomination:
AVMA Award  Top
This award is designed to recognize distinguished members of the Association who have contributed to the advancement of veterinary medicine in its organizational aspects. Veterinarians who have exerted outstanding leadership in building strong local, state, or regional associations, or who have contributed to the improvement of the national organization, are eligible. The Executive Board selects the recipient of the award, which consists of a Tiffany crystal sculpture and a $500 award.
AVMA Advocacy Award Top
This award is given up to once a year to an AVMA member or a nonveterinarian to recognize a contribution to advancing the AVMA legislative agenda and advocating on behalf of the veterinary profession. The Executive Board selects the recipient. The honor comprises a physical award, a $500 honorarium, and reimbursement of travel expenses up to $1,000 for the recipient to accept the award at the AVMA Annual Convention.
AVMA Animal Welfare Award Top
This award is given annually to an AVMA member to recognize achievements in advancing the welfare of animals through leadership, public service, education, research and product development, and/or advocacy. The Executive Board selects the recipient. The honor consists of a physical award, a $500 stipend, and reimbursement of expenses (in accord with AVMA policy) for travel to the award presentation.
AVMA Humane Award Top
This award is given annually to a nonveterinarian to recognize achievements in advancing the welfare of animals through leadership, public service, education, research and product development, and/or advocacy. The AVMA Animal Welfare Committee selects the recipient. The honor carries a physical award, a $500 stipend, and reimbursement of expenses (in accord with AVMA policy) for travel to the venue where the award will be presented.
AVMA Lifetime Excellence in Research Award Top
This award recognizes a veterinary researcher on the basis of lifetime achievement in basic, applied, or clinical research. The award is open to veterinarians who are retired from, or are currently working in, an academic, government, private, or public institution or in clinical practice. The honoree will receive a $5,000 award, round-trip airfare to the AVMA Annual Convention to accept the award, and two days' per diem for time spent at the convention. The recipient's name will be added to an engraved plaque.
AVMA Meritorious Service Award Top
Distinct from the AVMA Award, this award recognizes a veterinarian who has contributed to the advancement of veterinary medicine and has brought public honor and distinction to the profession through personal/professional activities conducted outside the areas of organized veterinary medicine and research. The Executive Board selects the recipient from a list of candidates forwarded by the House Advisory Committee. The award comprises a Tiffany crystal sculpture and a $500 award.
AVMA Practitioner Research Award Top
The recipient of this award is recognized for achievements in research that have advanced the veterinary profession. The Council on Research selects the recipient, an active AVMA member whose research activity and contributions were conducted and published while the veterinarian was engaged in private veterinary practice. A Tiffany crystal sculpture signifies the award, along with $500.
AVMA Public Service Award Top
This award recognizes an AVMA member for long terms of outstanding public service or unusual contributions to the practice or science of public health and regulatory veterinary medicine. The Council on Public Health and Regulatory Veterinary Medicine chooses the recipient, who is presented with a Tiffany crystal sculpture and a $500 award.
AVMF/AKC Career Achievement Award in Canine Research Top
Established in 2009 by the American Kennel Club and American Veterinary Medical Foundation, this award honors a candidate's long-term contribution to the field of canine research. The honoree will receive $5,000 and a Tiffany award, which will be presented at the annual AVMA Annual Convention, plus up to $1,000 to offset round-trip airfare to the convention and other travel expenses. Nominees must be active AVMA members.
AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Research Award Top
Established in 2009 by the Winn Feline Foundation and American Veterinary Medical Foundation, this award honors a candidate's contribution to advancing feline research. The honoree will receive $2,500 and a crystal sculpture, which will be presented at the AVMA Annual Convention, plus up to $1,000 to offset round-trip airfare to the convention and other travel expenses. The recipient will make a presentation at a seminar to be selected by the Winn Feline Foundation.
Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award Top
Named for the late Dr. Leo K. Bustad, former dean of the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine and past president of the Delta Society, this award recognizes the outstanding work of veterinarians in preserving and protecting human-animal relationships. The AVMA, Delta Society and Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. co-sponsor the award. It consists of a $5,000 grant to the recipient and a $5,000 grant to the veterinary school or not-for-profit service program of the recipient's choice, to further work in improving human-companion animal interactions. Also included is up to $5,000 for family travel to the award ceremony and/or approved speaking engagements.
Charles River Prize Top
Charles River established this award to recognize distinguished contributions to laboratory animal science and to promote educational growth in that field. The donor has stipulated that recipients must be AVMA members currently engaged in that field. The Charles River Commitment to Humane Animal Research Through Excellence and Responsibility (CHARTER) Program will process nominations, and the AVMA Executive Board will make the final selection. The prize consists of a plaque and a $2,500 award.
Royal Canin Award Top
To foster progress in small animal medicine and surgery, the Royal Canin Veterinary Diet annually offers this award to a veterinarian whose work within the preceding five years in clinical research or the basic sciences is judged to have contributed substantially to the advancement of the field. The award consists of a Fido statuette and $1,000.
XIIth International Veterinary Congress Prize Top
The Executive Board selects the recipient of this award, given for outstanding service by an AVMA member who has contributed to international understanding of veterinary medicine. The prize consists of a Tiffany crystal sculpture and a $500 award.
