FAQ on unwanted horses available
Printer-friendly version

The AVMA has released answers to frequently asked questions about unwanted horses and the Association's policy on horse slaughter.

The document offers information on what happens to unwanted horses, how horsemeat is used, and whether the method used in the United States to kill horses for slaughter was humane.

The document also addresses why the AVMA believes eliminating slaughter is not the answer to the unwanted horse issue and why the Association opposes the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. Web links for more information are provided.

The FAQ was developed by the Communications Division in cooperation with the Animal Welfare and Governmental Relations divisions. To view the document, visit the AVMA Web site at www.avma.org/issues and click on Frequently Asked Questions about Unwanted Horses and the AVMA's Policy on Horse Slaughter.
