AVMA changes, reaffirms electronic ID guidelines

The AVMA Executive Board approved changing the title of the position statement Companion Animal Electronic Identification Veterinary Practices and Procedures Guidelines to a title that reflects the statement's inclusion of birds and horses, which are not always classified or considered as companion animals. The statement will now be titled Electronic Identification Veterinary Practices and Procedures Guidelines for Companion Animals, Birds, and Equids.

The board also reaffirmed the position statement itself after the Council on Veterinary Service reviewed it in accordance with the five-year review directive.

The council believes that the statement should be reaffirmed, considering the current concerns and controversies surrounding microchipping of animals in the United States.

To obtain a copy of the position statement, contact the AVMA Membership and Field Services Division at (800) 248-2862, Ext. 6693.
