Miles H. Bairey

Dr. Bairey (MIN '61), 73, Nevada, Iowa, died Oct. 28, 2007. Prior to retirement in 1992, he worked for the Department of Agriculture, first at the National Animal Disease Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, and, then, for international services in Haiti. Early in his career, Dr. Bairey practiced in Highmore, S.D., for five years. He served on the Story County Youth and Shelter Services Board and the Nevada School Board. Dr. Bairey's wife, Janice; three sons; and two daughters survive him.


William K. Barker

Dr. Barker (GA '54), 81, Glen Allen, Va., died Oct. 20, 2007. He owned Allied Animal Hospital in Richmond, Va., prior to retirement. Dr. Barker served as president of the Central Virginia VMA from 1972-1973. His wife, Barbara; a daughter; and a son survive him. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Calvert County, P.O. Louis R. Becker

Dr. Becker (AUB '42), 91, Phoenix, died May 18, 2007.


Bruce T. Boehringer

Dr. Boehringer (COR '64), 67, Penn Valley, Calif., died July 3, 2007. Prior to retirement in 2004, he owned a practice in Fremont, Calif., for 34 years. Dr. Boehringer was a life member of the California VMA and a member of the Alameda County VMA. A Project HOPE volunteer, he worked with a preventive medicine team in Indonesia after the tsunami in 2004. Dr. Boehringer was awarded a presidential citation for his efforts. He was a veteran of the Army, attaining the rank of captain.

Dr. Boehringer's wife, Melinda, and two sons survive him. Memorials may be made to the Ohlone Humane Society, 39120 Argonaut Way, Fremont, CA 94538.


Benjamin D. Buster

Dr. Buster (AUB '81), 53, Selma, Ala., died June 1, 2007. He practiced at Selma Animal Hospital. His wife, Bonnie; a son; and a daughter survive him. Memorials may be made to the Donny Buster Memorial Fund, First Baptist Church, 218 Lauderdale St., Selma, AL 36701.


Robert N. Crawford

Dr. Crawford (COL '42), 92, Coquille, Ore., died Oct. 13, 2007. From 1944 until retirement in 1985, he owned a practice in Coquille. Earlier in his career, Dr. Crawford practiced in La Crosse, Wis., and Atlanta. He was a veteran of the Navy. Dr. Crawford is survived by his wife, Clarice; a son; and a daughter.


Howard A. Dawson

Dr. Dawson (MSU '56), 81, San Diego, died June 30, 2007. An equine practitioner, he served as veterinarian at Michigan's Detroit Race Course and Hazel Park Raceway during his 36-year career. Dr. Dawson was a Marine during World War II. His wife, Phyllis; two daughters; and a son survive him.


Nathan E. Eskew

Dr. Eskew (MO '60), 74, Oklahoma City, died Sept. 22, 2007. He most recently served as director of the Cleveland County Animal Shelter in Norman, Okla. From 1984-2003, Dr. Eskew was a staff veterinarian for the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture. Prior to that, he owned Hillcrest Animal Hospital in Oklahoma City for more than 20 years. Dr. Eskew was a member of the Oklahoma VMA. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Dr. Eskew's wife, Beverly; three sons; and two daughters survive him. Don N. McCormick

Dr. McCormick (MO '76), 58, Monett, Mo., died Oct. 7, 2007. He retired in 2001 from Monett Veterinary Hospital. Early in his career, Dr. McCormick practiced in Portland, Ore., for three years. His wife, Vicki, and a son survive him. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 700 Sycamore, Monett, MO 65708.


Earl A. McDowell

Dr. McDowell (GA '55), 85, Laurens, S.C., died Sept. 7, 2007. Prior to retirement in 1998, he worked for the Department of Agriculture in North Carolina and South Carolina. Earlier in his career, Dr. McDowell owned a practice in Greenville, S.C., and served as veterinarian for the Greenville Zoo. He was a past president of the Blue Ridge VMA and a member of the South Carolina Association of Veterinarians, American Association of Avian Pathologists, American Veterinary Radiology Society, and American Association of Zoo Veterinarians.

Dr. McDowell was past president of the Wade Hampton Kiwanis Club. He was elected Kiwanian of the Year in 1965. In 1966, Dr. McDowell was named Boss of the Year by the Greenville chapter of the National Secretaries Association. His two daughters survive him.


Daniel P. Sasmore

Dr. Sasmore (COR '39), 93, Union City, Calif., died June 23, 2007. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, he owned a pathology consulting firm in San Carlos, Calif., prior to retirement. Earlier in his career, Dr. Sasmore worked as a pathologist for Syntex in Palo Altos, Calif.; Squibb Pharmaceuticals in New Jersey; and Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, Calif. An Air Force veteran of World War II, he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. Dr. Sasmore's wife, Marinka, and a son survive him.
