Jazz up for National Pet Week
Printer-friendly version

The Auxiliary to the AVMA will celebrate the 2008 National Pet Week, May 4-10. The theme "Pets Jazz Up Your Life" was inspired by New Orleans, where the AVMA Annual Convention will be held July 19-22, 2008.

National Pet Week is an annual event that promotes responsible pet ownership, celebrates the human-animal bond, and promotes public awareness of veterinary medicine. The event was jointly founded in 1981 by the AVMA and the Auxiliary and is now widely celebrated throughout the United States and other parts of the world.

To promote pet week, the Auxiliary held its annual poster contest and creative writing contest.

In the poster contest, Ivorey Green, a sixth-grader from Elmwood, Neb., won the grand prize of $300 and has her poster featured on the cover of this issue of JAVMA.

"It so matched the theme of the jazz players in New Orleans," said Maureen Wilson, 2002-2007 vice president for public relations at the Auxiliary, about why the group chose the poster. More than 300 posters were entered in the contest.

Samantha Carpenter, a 10-year-old from Monticello, Ark., was the winner of the $300 grand prize in the creative writing contest. Her entry, "How Pets Jazz Up My Life," can be found on the Auxiliary's Web site at www.avmaaux.org/npwcontest.html.

About 270 entries were received for the writing contest. Entries were required to be stories or poems of 20 to 200 words.

Along with the contests, the Auxiliary will promote pet week by offering promotional items such as banners, bookmarks, brochures, and T-shirts. Turn to page 214 for the order form.

In 2009, the theme for National Pet Week will be "Pets—The Spice of Life."
