Accreditation standards clarified, site visits authorized

The Executive Board approved minor additions to portions of the Standards for Accredited Colleges of Veterinary Medicine as clarification.

The additions pertain to ambulatory field service vehicles and research programs. There was general agreement among the deans of the veterinary schools and colleges to the additions to standards 3 and 10 recommended by the Council on Education.

The statement " ... teaching hospitals that may include but are not limited to ambulatory/field service vehicles ..." was added to Standard 3, Physical Facilities and Equipment. The change, the council wrote in its proposal, ensures that veterinary schools and colleges understand that ambulatory and field service vehicles are extensions of the hospitals.

The statement "... that integrate with and strengthen the professional program" was added to Standard 10, Research Programs. The addition ensures that veterinary schools and colleges have a clear understanding about the requirement for a high-quality research program that integrates with or strengthens the professional educational program at each institution.

In addition, the board authorized site visits to the University of Dublin Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Melbourne Faculty of Veterinary Science, and University of Sydney Faculty of Veterinary Science.
