Revised guide to drug, vaccine, pesticide use in aquaculture available

After several years of work and an extensive interagency clearance process, the revised edition of the popular Guide to Drug, Vaccine, and Pesticide Use in Aquaculture is now available as a Web document.

The original version was published in 1994 by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service and was prepared by the Joint Subcommittee on Aquaculture's Working Group on Quality Assurance in Aquaculture Production. This working group provides a national forum to support drug approvals for aquatic species, industry quality assurance programs, and educational initiatives associated with aquaculture product safety.

The guide represents a federal interagency effort with contributions by the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Pesticide Programs, Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine and Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, and Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service.

The revised version of the guide is available only in electronic formats, to facilitate timely updates. Users can print selected information for a hard copy reference. The guide offers more complete information through direct links to important Web sites, including product labels for many pesticides and updated information on federal agency Web pages. The listing of federally approved products for use in aquaculture is now current for drugs and vaccines, and includes pesticides registered as of January 2004. Content has also been revised to address changes in legislation and compliance policies.
