Guidelines for companion animal care updated

On recommendation of the AVMA Committee on the Human-Animal Bond, the Executive Board has approved amendments to the Companion Animal Care Guidelines.

The revised guidelines reflect advances in knowledge in such areas as behavior and environmental enrichment, and also clarify recommendations and update references.

The guidelines are intended to aid the proper care and humane treatment of animals in nonagricultural facilities, such as those operated by humane societies, pet stores, and veterinary hospitals and clinics.

Animal husbandry, environment, sanitation, weekend and holiday care, and disaster planning are some of the topics the guidelines address. The section on euthanasia has been deleted from the updated guidelines.

Copies of the guidelines can be obtained by contacting the AVMA at (800) 248-2862, Ext. 6667.
