The AVMA has released a new client education brochure identifying common household hazards to pets.

"What You Should Know About Household Hazards" was developed with assistance from AVMA staff and veterinary experts at the Animal Poison Control Center of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The trifold brochure points out the obvious and not-so-obvious household items found in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and garage of a typical home that pose a risk to a pet's health.

The brochure will heighten pet owners' awareness of substances and objects that can sicken or injure pets, from pennies to toxic foods and plants. Owners will also learn how most health hazards can be avoided by reducing or eliminating access or exposure.

This is the latest title in the AVMA line of informational materials for veterinarians to distribute to clients or to the public at school or community events.
