Veterinary emergency, critical care groups hold symposium

Event: 14th International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium, Sept. 17-21, Phoenix
Program: This year's symposium marked 20 years since the first one was held. Attendees at the symposium—conducted jointly by the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society, American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, and Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians—included 1,605 veterinarians, 728 veterinary technicians, 72 students, 61 practice managers, and 568 exhibitors. The focus was imaging for emergency and critical care. More than 450 hours of continuing education were offered. The symposium combined lectures, wet and dry labs, and seminars and workshops and was the venue for the annual meetings of the Academy of Veterinary Technician Anesthetists, Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Foundation, and, for the second time, American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists. Dr. Steve Haskins presented the Robert P. Knowles Memorial Keynote Lecture on the evolution of veterinary emergency and critical care and the 20-year history of the IVECCS. Dr. Haskins is professor emeritus at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Wayne Wingfield spoke on disaster medicine. Dr. Wingfield is professor emeritus at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The symposium was dedicated to Dr. Roger W. Gfeller, a past president of the VECCS, who died in November 2007 (see JAVMA obituary, June 1, 2008, page 1630). A golf tournament was held during the symposium with proceeds to be used to establish a scholarship fund in Dr. Gfeller's name at Kansas State University.
Awards: Ira M. Zaslow Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Elke Rudloff, Glendale, Wis., for her contributions to the VECCS and her 10-year service as the society's scientific program chair. A diplomate of the ACVECC, Dr. Rudloff is director of education at the Animal Emergency Center in Glendale. She also serves as the center's senior medical staff officer. Hill's Dr. Jack Mara ACVECC Achievement Award: Dr. Chick Weisse, Philadelphia, for outstanding achievement in the area of diagnostic imaging (interventional radiology) for emergency and critical care. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, Dr. Weisse is the director of interventional radiology service at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. He also serves as an assistant professor of surgery at the school and as assistant professor of radiology at the university hospital. ACVECC Research Grant Award: Dr. Bettina Dunkel, Royal Veterinary College, United Kingdom, for "Determination of the association between hypercoagulability and decreased survival in horses with ischemic and inflammatory gastrointestinal disease." Small Animal Resident Abstract Award, sponsored jointly by VECCS, ACVECC, and Boehringer Ingelheim: A $500 stipend was awarded to Dr. Jen Pittman, University of Georgia, for "The effect of unfractionated heparin on TEG analysis in healthy dogs." Large Animal Resident Abstract Award, sponsored by Mila International: A $500 stipend was awarded to Dr. Jarred Williams, The Ohio State University, for "Effect of intravenous lidocaine administration on laminar inflammation in the black walnut extract model of laminitis." ACVA Abstract Award, sponsored by Smiths Medical and Surgivet: First place—Dr. Alex Hawley, Tufts University, for "Identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) within exon 1 of the canine MU opioid receptor gene." Honorable mention—Drs. Maria Bellei, Ontario Veterinary College, for "Pharmacokinetics of epidural morphine in awake and isoflurane-anesthetized horses," and Reza Seddighi, University of Tennessee, for "The effect of Midazolam on isoflurane MAC preventing motor movement in dogs." Case Report Award, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim: A $300 stipend was awarded to Dr. Garrett Pachtinger, University of Pennsylvania, for "Ransom." Technician Case Report Award, sponsored by Pfizer Animal Health: A $300 stipend was awarded to Julie Posch, Seattle, for "Gastroesophageal intrassusception in a Setter mix."

Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society
Business: It was reported that membership has increased when compared with the same time last year. Discussions are ongoing to pursue a program to accredit emergency practices.

Program: Forty-two abstracts were presented and several panel and focus sessions were held during the symposium. Speakers addressed the use and balance of anesthesia and the mechanisms of pain, anesthesia, and new analgesic drugs.

Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Foundation
Program: The VECCF sponsored free spay/neuter clinics for two American Indian reservations in the Phoenix area for three days prior to the symposium.
Business: The board of directors discussed the financial status of the foundation and the spay/neuter projects held prior to the symposium. It was decided that another project would be scheduled during the 2009 symposium.

Event: Annual meeting, Oct. 16-19, Madison
Awards: Veterinarian of the Year: Dr. Thomas H. Howard, Poynette. A 1969 graduate of Purdue University, Dr. Howard worked for Gala Biotech in Middleton, prior to retirement in 2007. He served as state veterinarian from 1993-1996. Treasurer of the WVMA for the past eight years, he most recently chaired the association's executive search committee. Meritorious Service Award: Dr. Robert R. Leder, Bear Creek. A 1982 graduate of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Leder owns United Veterinary Service, a mixed animal practice in Bear Creek. He is a four-year member of the WVMA Executive Board and has served on the association's Public Health and Food Safety, Personnel, Animal Welfare, and Executive committees. Dr. Leder headed an animal welfare subcommittee that developed five guiding principles for practice. Friend of Veterinary Medicine Award: Rachel Rothschild, JD, Madison, won this award. Prior to retirement in August 2008, Rothschild served 26 years as assistant dean at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. She supported the school's administration, faculty, staff, and students with issues related to immigration, risk management, and rabies immunizations. Rothschild also worked with the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing.
