California's bovine tuberculosis status will drop now that the state has detected the disease in three cattle herds.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed cases of bovine tuberculosis in three dairy herds in Fresno County during the first half of the year. As a result, the USDA will downgrade California's bovine tuberculosis status from accredited free to modified accredited advanced.

From January to late June, investigators in California tested more than 105 herds and more than 150,000 cattle for the disease. The state also has a rule that requires testing of dairy breeding cattle entering California to help prevent reintroduction of the disease.
