The manufacturer of Micotil, an antimicrobial used to treat respiratory disease in sheep and cattle, has included additional human health warnings to the drug label.

Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, in February announced that the following statements had been added to the Micotil label: "Injection of this drug in humans has been associated with fatalities"; "In case of human injection, consult a physician immediately and apply ice to the injection site"; and "Apply ice to the injection site and provide supportive treatment."

Elanco made the revisions after a 38-year-old Nebraska cattleman died in March 2003 after an accidental injection of Micotil.

Each bottle of Micotil also includes a new client information sheet to help clients understand all label warnings and cautionary statements. Written in English and Spanish, the sheet instructs producers what to do in case of accidental human exposure to Micotil.

Additionally, Elanco has revised its "Micotil Client Dispensing Information" pad and developed a "Micotil Dose and Administration" laminated poster, also in English and Spanish.
