Legislative update—Mid-Year report

The 2009 legislative session has proven to be another busy year with states introducing and adopting over 1000 bills relating to veterinary medicine. So far, the AVMA has tracked just over 1200 bills, many of which have been signed into law. [more]

AVMA responds to Pew Commission Report on Industrial Farm Animal Production

The AVMA has been working for the past several months to develop a response to the Final Report of the Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production. We felt it was imperative to respond to the Pew report due to Pew's widely publicized findings and recommendations, which are being used to advocate for the passage of H.R. 1549 and S. 619, Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA), which the AVMA does not support. Veterinarian Services Investment Act introduced in Congress

The Veterinarian Services Investment Act, (H.R. 3519), which will help states address their most pressing veterinary workforce needs, was introduced on July 31 in the U.S. House of Representatives by congressmen Adrian Smith (R-NE) and Leonard Boswell (D-IA). [more]

In a victory for veterinary medicine, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation to ensure statewide uniformity of standards for medical professionals. [more]
