A detailed memo explaining all the changes to the Accreditation
Policies and Procedures manual of the AVMA CVTEA was emailed to all
AVMA-accredited programs in veterinary technology. The following is a
summary of the changes made to the manual:
Changes made to Appendix I - Essential and Recommended Skills List
- Jugular was changed from required to recommended in Section 3 -
Nursing, under Patient Care-Therapeutics, under Fluid Therapy. Cephalic
and saphenous remain required.

injection under Section 8 - Laboratory Animal Procedures, under Tasks,
under Perform methods of injection. The method is required for rats and
mice only. Further, intramuscular was changed from required to

Avian, Exotic, Small Mammals and Fish Procedures, under Tasks. Further
clarification was also made to the definition of "group activity"..
Changes to other Appendices in the Policies and Procedures

as follows "anesthetic machine maintenance with vaporizer validation
and recalibration if indicated
vaporizer calibration and

reporting of salary information for program directors was added to the
self-study report.

to clarify that the emergency crash kit should have accessible drugs,
supplies, and equipment that allows portability of the kit to different
locations.

Thank you to everyone who provided data for the annual AVMA CVTEA
veterinary technology program survey. The entire results are posted online
at http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/vettech_survey_results.pdf.
In addition, a salary chart is posted online that compares salaries for
Program Directors who are veterinarians versus veterinary technicians at
http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/program_director_salary_chart.pdf.
The survey reported, in part, that there are approximately 14,019
students enrolled in AVMA CVTEA accredited campus programs. When including
distance education programs, the number of enrolled students increases to
approximately 19,777 students. Of these amounts, approximately 1,840 are
enrolled in baccalaureate programs.
For the 2007-2008 academic year, there were approximately 3,613
graduates; of that amount 3,348 are graduates from associate degree
programs and 265 are graduates of baccalaureate degree programs. |

Accreditation Categories
The definition of full accreditation was amended slightly. The
definition of probational accreditation was changed to "probationary"
accreditation. In addition, a category of "Administrative probation"
accreditation was added; this definition also includes possible penalty
fees. The complete new definitions are found in the Accreditation
Policies and Procedures Manual of the AVMA CVTEA and online at http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/cvtea_process.asp.

Q: What is an "FTE"?
A: FTE stands for "full-time equivalent." Determining what constitutes
an FTE varies from institution to institution. Some colleges determine FTE
by clock hours or contact hours per week or per month. The CVTEA accepts
the method used by the institution for determining an FTE; however, some
institutional accrediting agencies may have requirements on how to
determine FTE.
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) area on the AVMA CVTEA website has
been updated and includes useful information for starting a program,
preparing for a site visit, and addressing issues related to Institutional
Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUC) http://www.avma.org/education/cvea/cvtea_faq.asp. |
